Built at the end of the nineteenth century, the house was originally a rest stop for horse-drawn carriages and carriages. At the beginning of the 20th century, when the rich and wealthy Viennese citizens discovered the places close to the city in the Vienna Woods as summer residences for themselves and their families to relax and unwind, some of them spent their “summer retreat”, as it was called at the time, at “Haus Feuchtl” in Purkersdorf near Vienna every summer for years, from the end of June to the beginning of September. At that time, however, it was not yet called that, but was pompously known as the “Pearl of the Vienna Woods”.
Even when my mother, the youngest daughter of the founder, my grandfather, later ran it as a hotel, it was still called that for the first few years. Back then, there was no running water and no toilets in the rooms. Water was brought to the rooms from the well in the garden, where there was also the only toilet. But the location of the house was of course, then as now, one of the most beautiful in the area.
My father, the painter Franz Feuchtl, who came from a cultivated, educated Viennese family of artists, then gradually turned the simple, rural accommodation into one of the most modern and comfortable houses in the area at the time and my parents gave it its current name “Haus Feuchtl”, which I have kept to this day as a reminder of my father, a truly extraordinary person and artist.
I have been running the house since 2011. After studying abroad and living in Vienna for almost thirty years, it was only relatively late in life, after the death of my father and some ugly inter-family disputes, that I began to rebuild the Feuchtl house, which had become quite dilapidated and almost uninhabitable, piece by piece.
It cost me a lot of money, energy and heart and soul, but I have to say I am really proud of what it is today: With its friendly, human atmosphere, its subtle, artistic ambience and the comfort, peace and warmth that it radiates, it is an exceptional house in every way, where you can live a wonderfully pleasant and secure life in a comfortable private room or a well-equipped monthly room.
